Short Term Training In Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS)

 

Course Objective

This course was started in the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology to train Ophthalmologists in manual SICS. For ophthalmic Surgeons all over the world, manual SICS provides the ideal stepping stone to mastering phacoemulsification. The objective of this course is to convert an ECCE surgeon to perform SICS with the help of a well-structured training program

The candidate will have training on pig eyes at the wet lab prior to performing real-time surgery.

  • TIO has developed SOP and CDs for trainees.
  • Access to various standard and recent books and videos in the library.
  • Post-operative review of cases by a mentor.
  • Hands-on practice (Clinics, Theatre, OMEC, and Cataract workshops)
  • Participation in Journal club/grand rounds/guest lectures.

 

Training Schedule

1st week

Orientation, familiarization with instruments, equipment and Tilganga Team. Learning SOP and manual on ECCE with IOL (SICS) and wet lab exposure in extra OT time.

End of the first week - Hands-on training followed by a discussion with tutor.

2nd week

Learning SOP for ECCE with IOL in the operating theatre of TIO, OPD, Post Op. patient- Management of post-op. patients. Discussion on outreach surgical clinic and its management

3rd week

Learning SOP (Surgical Operating Procedure) for ECCE (SICS) with IOL in TIO. Discussion on post-operative complication and its management.

4th Week

Final discussion about the surgical technique and debriefing about complications and post-operative cases and Evaluation/ Monitoring of the program.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Qualified practicing Ophthalmologist with MD/MS degree from a recognized university/institute
  • Independent performance of at least 10 corneal/scleral repair  
  • Independent performance of at least 5 pterygium surgery with graft

No. of cases: 15-20 cases (depends on surgeon’s skill)

 

Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided for the selected candidates based on their requests. Candidates posted in TIO can stay at TIO'S Trainees Apartment. For candidates selected for other centers, accommodation is available at hotels/hostels.

- USD 25/day for single room and USD 40/day for double room (for International candidates)

 

Food

Lunch is served at the Canteen (local Nepalese menu) and trainees should prepare breakfast and dinner themselves. However, there is a number of good restaurants located within walking distance. 

Mode of Payment

The intimation will be sent to the selected candidates by email/post. Candidates can pay the course fee through wire transfer. Once paid, the fee is non-refundable for any reason.
